Quick answer

In Google Docs, choose Insert → Page elements → Page number, select the top-right option, and type your last name before the number. Then set one-inch margins, double spacing, and a one-half-inch first-line indent.

Add the last name and page number

Open the Insert menu, find Page elements, then Page number. Choose the option that places numbering at the top right starting on page one. Click before the number, type your last name and a space, then confirm right alignment.

  • ✓  Keep the header on the first page
  • ✓  Use automatic page numbers
  • ✓  Set header distance to one-half inch
  • ✓  Match the paper’s font

Set margins and double spacing

Open File → Page setup and confirm one inch for all four margins. Select the document text, choose Format → Line & paragraph spacing → Double, and remove extra paragraph spacing if present.

Create the first page

At the left margin, type your name, instructor, course, and date on separate lines. Center the title on the next line, then return to left alignment for the body. Use the ruler or indentation options for a one-half-inch first-line indent.

Create your MLA header

Enter your details once, see the complete first page, then copy or download it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my last name appear only on one page?

Make sure you edited the document header and inserted an automatic page number instead of typing the number in the body.

Should ‘Different first page’ be on?

Normally no, because the standard MLA running header begins on page one unless your instructor says otherwise.
