MLA Heading Format: The Four Lines You Need

The MLA heading identifies you, your instructor, your course, and the date. It belongs at the upper left of the first page—not inside the document header area.

Quick answer

Type your full name, instructor’s name, course name or number, and the date on four separate lines. Align the heading left and double-space it without extra blank lines.

MLA heading order

Use four lines in this order. If your instructor gives a different requirement, follow the assignment instructions.

Your Name
Instructor Name
Course Name or Number
Day Month Year

Spacing and placement

Begin the heading one inch from the top and flush with the left margin. Double-space each line. Do not add extra paragraph spacing before or after it.

  • ✓  Left-aligned
  • ✓  One-inch top and left margins
  • ✓  Double-spaced
  • ✓  Same font and size as the paper

How to write the date

A clear day-month-year format avoids ambiguity: 28 September 2026. MLA guidance also allows the month to be abbreviated; ask your instructor whether they have a preference.
